The battle hardened AFC/m23 rebels stormed Idjwi Island by boats on Wednesday (March-12). They got there on the boats, without fighting.
Idjwi territory (South Kivu) is located in the middle of Lake Kivu, border with Rwanda.
Idjwi is the only Congolese entity that had never known war. When the rebels arrived they held a meeting. The territory of Idjwi largely depends on Bukavu, Goma, Kalehe and Kabare.
This island territory of South Kivu links the cities of Goma and Bukavu by lake.
With the occupation of Idjwi, the AFC/M23 rebellion is now present in seven territories out of the eight in South Kivu, namely, Kalehe, Kabare, Walungu, Uvira, Fizi and Mwenga.
Only the Shabunda territory is spared at this stage.
