The President of Burundi has reassured the public that authorities have contained a fire and explosions that broke out at a military facility in the country’s economic capital, while officials provided further details on the cause of the incident.

In a message addressed to the nation, Évariste Ndayishimiye thanked both domestic and international well-wishers for their solidarity after a fire erupted at a logistical warehouse within the Musaga military base in Bujumbura.

He emphasized that the situation is under control, seeking to calm public concern.

Additional information from the military indicates that the incident was allegedly triggered by an electrical fault.

Army spokesperson Gaspard Baratuza stated that the explosions heard across the city were caused by a serious electrical accident at an ammunition depot within the Musaga camp.

He urged residents to remain calm and avoid the area while emergency teams worked to contain the situation.

Witnesses reported loud blasts and plumes of smoke rising over parts of Bujumbura, prompting temporary panic among residents. However, authorities moved quickly to secure the site and prevent further escalation.

The Musaga military base is a key installation supporting Burundi’s armed forces logistics, and incidents involving ammunition storage facilities carry heightened risks due to the presence of combustible materials.

Despite the severity of the explosions, officials have not yet confirmed casualties or the full extent of damage.

The government said has launched a full investigation into the incident, while security forces maintain control of the area.
