Authorities at the National Identification Agency (NIDA) have called on residents of Kigali to take immediate action as the deadline for biometric registration for the electronic national ID (e-ID) draws closer, with only eight days remaining.

The exercise, which involves photographing citizens for the new digital identity cards, is scheduled to conclude across all sites in Kigali on April 2, 2026. NIDA had earlier expanded the number of registration centers throughout the city to ease access and reduce congestion.

Speaking to media, NIDA Director General Josephine Mukesha emphasized that while the agency aims to complete the process efficiently, no citizen will ultimately be left behind.

“We want this process to be fast and well-organized, but we also don’t want anyone to miss out,” she said.

“Those who are unable to register before the deadline will still have another opportunity.”

After wrapping up operations in Kigali, NIDA teams will shift their efforts to the Eastern Province, beginning with districts such as Bugesera and Ngoma in the coming weeks.

Additional districts will be covered subsequently, with further details expected to be announced.

Despite the approaching deadline, officials have clarified that there are currently no plans to extend the registration period in Kigali. However, the nationwide rollout of the e-ID program will continue, ensuring that all Rwandans eventually have access to the service.

Mukesha also highlighted ongoing efforts to decentralize the service by installing registration equipment at sector offices, enabling citizens to access the service closer to home even after mobile teams move on.

She urged residents not to wait until the last minute, noting that accessing the service is currently more convenient while teams are still stationed within communities.

“We encourage everyone not to delay. Please go now while our teams are still near you—it’s the easiest time to get registered.”
