Gen. Makenga Arrives in Rubaya After Heavy Fighting Against Wazalendo Militia

The AFC/M23 rebels said that they are firmly in control of Rubaya a predominantly mining zone following heavy fighting against government troops and allies.

After heavy fighting in areas far from the mining hub, top commanders said that they have arrived in Rubaya ,led by Gen Sultan Makenga with Brig Gen Gaceri and Col Gakufe Japheth,Local people say their presence is giving new hope for peace.

Fighting begun on Sunday, February 22, 2026, between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters in the towns of Kasenyi, Chugi and Kinigi, located in the Bahunde chiefdom (Masisi territory) in North Kivu, near the mining town of Rubaya.

According to local sources, the Wazalendo have managed to regain control of these three areas, previously considered strategic positions for the AFC/M23 in this region of high security and economic importance.

The proximity of Rubaya, known for its mining activity, gives these localities particular significance in the military strategy of the warring parties.

The AFC/M23 rebels have reinforced their positions on the hill known as “Sita”, with the aim of containing the opposing advance and attempting to regain control of Chugi and Kinigi, according to our sources.

Monday, was majorly fragile calm on the front line. However, the situation remained volatile, and residents feared an imminent resumption of fighting in this part of Masisi territory, already weakened by months of insecurity.
