important disarmament and demobilization operation has begun in Sikikede, located in the Vakaga Prefecture of the Central African Republic (CAR), marking a significant step in the national Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program.
The operation, which officially started on December 7, is being conducted by the national DDR authority and enabled through MINUSCA’s extensive security, logistical, financial, and technical support.
On the first day of the operation, ex-combatants from the FPRC (Front Populaire pour la Renaissance de la Centrafrique) voluntarily handed over their weapons to the national DDR unit, signaling a new phase in efforts to stabilize the region and reduce armed activity in the north.
According to Valentine Rugwabiza, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Central African Republic, the initiative reflects renewed momentum in the peace and reconciliation process.
“This operation demonstrates the commitment of all partners to advancing peace, strengthening state authority, and giving former combatants an opportunity to reintegrate into civilian life,” Rugwabiza said.
MINUSCA’s involvement; providing security for the operation, transporting personnel and equipment, and ensuring technical oversight, has been key to the program’s launch in this remote area, where insecurity and limited infrastructure have long complicated state-led peace efforts.
The ongoing operation in Sikikede is expected to continue in the coming days as more armed elements present themselves for demobilization.
Authorities say the process will be followed by reintegration programs aimed at helping former fighters return to their communities and rebuild their livelihoods.
The government and MINUSCA both describe the initiative as a crucial step toward long-term stability in Vakaga Prefecture and across the Central African Republic.
