Togo will today host the African Union high-level summit aimed at exploring the situation in the Great Lakes region.
The President of the Commission of the African Union, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, on Friday arrived in Lomé ahead of the scheduled summit.
He was received by Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.
Their discussions focused on peace issues, mechanisms for dealing with security crises, and new challenges in regional development and African integration.
“Following my assumption of office as Chairperson of the African Union Commission, I was pleased to come to Togo to discuss with the government issues of concern to the continent, including peace, security, regional development and integration, under the leadership of His Excellency the President of the Council,” he said.
The African Union Commission intends to strengthen the role of preventive diplomacy, support African mediation initiatives, and support the efforts of Member States to address security challenges, particularly in areas affected by armed conflict and violent extremism.
