The African Union (AU) has expressed grave concern over recent events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and military attacks on Venezuelan institutions.
In an official statement, the AU reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of international law, emphasizing respect for the sovereignty of states, territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
The regional bloc underscored the importance of dialogue, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and adherence to constitutional and institutional frameworks. It called for actions guided by cooperation, good neighbourliness, and peaceful coexistence among nations.
Highlighting that Venezuela’s internal challenges are complex, the AU stressed that sustainable solutions must come through inclusive political dialogue led by Venezuelans themselves.
The organization expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.
The AU also urged all concerned parties to exercise restraint, act responsibly, and respect international law to prevent escalation and safeguard regional peace and stability.
