A Ugandan prominent human rights lawyer Sarah Bireete has spent Tuesday night in Police detention in the capital Kampala.
Before Ms Bireete’s arrest and detention, members of the country’s security apparatus surrounded her home and plucked her out.
“My house is under siege by Police and Army,” Bireete said at 4pm via her verified account on platform X.
Kawala Rachel, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson said via platform X, “The uganda police force would like to confirm the arrest of Sarah Bireete director for center for constitutional governance. She is in police custody. She will be arraigned before court in due course.”
Close relatives revealed that Bireete is detained at detained at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala.
Uganda is scheduled to go for Presidential elections in January and critics are tagging Bireete’s arrest to her expanded involvement with elections.

“She has been actively immersed in civil society monitoring activities related to Uganda’s 2026 electoral process, including early assessments of the political environment, citizen mobilisation and advocacy around electoral integrity,” a local tabloid Said on Tuesday moments after her arrest.
Bireete has been very critical about the involvement of security forces in political processes and demanding protection of civil liberties.
According to her profile, Bireete describes herself as a founding partner and Executive Director of Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG)., a Kampala-based constitutional and governance watchdog that works on electoral integrity, rule of law, civic education and accountability.
