Taarifa Investigative Desk has established that DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi on Sunday made a quick direct flight to Angola to seek urgent military support.
According to a source close to the diplomatic entourage, “the Congolese leader requested from his counterpart João Lourenço special military support to secure only the provinces of Haut-Katanga and Lualaba following the advance of the AFC/M23 in the Grand Katanga area.”
Souleiman Elonga a sociopolitical commentator argues, “Angola holds the presidency of the AU. Under these conditions, it cannot take sides, unless the option is raised at the AU level or within the framework of a sub-regional organization.”
However, Elonga explains that the process could be long and even late. At most, Angola can provide support in terms of experts and equipment. But, at the current stage, that also seems unlikely.
The visit of which it’s contents remain tightly guarded, some sources believe Tshisekedi could be interested in reviving the Luanda process, a diplomatic initiative aimed at restoring peace in eastern DRC.
DRC’s LePotentiel, reported that the hurried trip aims to strengthen regional mediation efforts as the Crisis in Kivu keeps intensifying daily despite the Washington Peace deal signed by Rwanda and DRC.
Tshisekedi and Lorenco discussions also included strengthening bilateral cooperation between the DRC and Angola, as well as regional challenges related to peace and security in Central Africa.
