The AFC/M23 rebels have swiftly captured Mboko town located about 56Km into the Fizi axis.
With this lightening speed offensives, the rebels control now stretches past Burundi, heading toward the Tanganyika–Tanzania border, with a clear pathway toward Zambia.
At this pace, the entire southern and eastern flank of Congo could soon be inaccessible to support from Burundi, Tanzania, or Zambia.
The capture of Uvira has caused significant economic consequences for Bujumbura a major commercial city of Burundi.
Burundi’s economy was largely dependent on exports and imports from DRC especially petroleum products and various industrial products.
Gasoline prices have shot up sharply in Burundi since the fall of Uvira to the AFC/M23 Rebels.
” A litre of gasoline has risen from ~10,000 to 35,000 FBu” Muhayimana Frugence resident in Bujumbura told Taarifa fearing a “return to severe shortages”.
