President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been officially endorsed as the National Chairman and Presidential Flag Bearer of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for the 2026 elections, as the party opened the first meeting of its 4th National Conference.
In his address to delegates, Museveni congratulated newly elected party leaders and urged them to build on the foundation laid by the elders of the Movement.
He said it was encouraging to see leaders stepping forward to continue the work that the elders began.
The NRM has adopted the slogan, “Protecting the Gains as We Make a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.”
Museveni said this vision will guide the party in the next term and outlined priority areas he believes will define Uganda’s progress.
These include fighting poverty, combating corruption, ensuring the police effectively fight crime, maintaining roads, providing free education in government schools, improving access to healthcare, and guaranteeing clean water for households.
He emphasized that government already allocates 1.3 billion shillings to every district annually for road maintenance.
“If we successfully address these issues, I am confident we shall make that qualitative leap into High Middle-Income status,” Museveni told the delegates.
The President also thanked the party for once again placing its trust in him as the NRM’s presidential flag bearer.
“I want to appreciate the NRM for endorsing me once again as your National Chairman and Presidential Flag Bearer. The Movement has ensured peace and stability in Uganda through our principles of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, democracy, and socio-economic transformation,” he said, noting that the country’s economy has expanded 17 times since 1986.
Alongside Museveni’s endorsement, the NRM National Executive Committee proposed names for the positions of Vice Chairpersons, which will be voted on during the upcoming National Delegates Conference.
Party officials say the endorsements signal unity at the top of the party, while the Vice Chairperson races will test internal representation and balance.
Museveni said he would share more with delegates when the National Conference resumes later in the week.
