Catalyst Impact Lab has been launched as an innovation and venture-building platform focused on identifying, developing, and scaling African-led solutions to some of the continent’s most pressing development challenges.

The launch was effected on September 26th at a colourful ceremony.

Across Africa, entrepreneurs are developing solutions to critical challenges in energy access, healthcare, agriculture, environmental sustainability, economic opportunity, and other areas.

Yet many promising solutions struggle to move beyond the early stages of development because the capital, technical support, market access, and networks required to scale are often difficult to access.

Catalyst Impact Lab was created to help close that gap.

The Lab works at the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship, and development finance, identifying promising founders and solutions and providing the support needed to transform them into sustainable, scalable ventures.

“Too many promising solutions never make it beyond the idea or early implementation stage because the capital, technical support, and networks required to scale are not readily available,” said Tina Mbachu, Founder of Catalyst Impact Lab.

“Catalyst Impact Lab exists to help close that gap—working alongside African innovators to turn locally developed solutions into scalable engines of economic and social progress.”

From Ideas to Impact

Catalyst Impact Lab has already begun putting this model into practice through Ignite, its early-stage founder program.

The inaugural Ignite cohort brought together 30 founders for rigorous programming; with six founders transitioning into the venture studio, where they will receive continued support to strengthen their businesses, develop partnerships, access capital, and prepare for scale.

These six ventures illustrate the breadth of the challenges and opportunities Catalyst Impact Lab seeks to address—and the potential of African entrepreneurs to develop solutions grounded in the realities of their own markets.

Building a Pipeline for Africa’s Development

Catalyst Impact Lab’s approach is built around a simple premise: Africa’s development challenges require more than capital alone.

They require a pipeline of capable entrepreneurs, locally relevant innovation, patient support, and pathways to scale.

The organization is developing an integrated model that connects three stages of venture development:

Through Ignite, Catalyst Impact Lab identifies and supports early-stage founders with promising ideas and solutions.

Through the Venture Studio, Catalyst works more deeply with selected ventures to strengthen their business models, operations, products, partnerships, and readiness for investment and growth.

Ultimately, Catalyst Impact Lab aims to help ventures access the capital, markets, institutional partnerships, and other resources necessary to scale their impact.

“We believe Africa’s development challenges are also opportunities to build new models for inclusive growth,” said Tina Mbachu.

“There is extraordinary talent across the continent building solutions to problems that affect millions of people. What is often missing is the infrastructure around those founders—the support, capital, networks, and pathways that allow promising solutions to become scalable businesses.”

By connecting innovation, venture building, and catalytic capital, Catalyst Impact Lab aims to help move more African solutions from promising ideas to scalable impact.
