Kenyans and other guests have been left confused as Togolese President addressed Lamu event in french without an Interpreter.
President Jean-Lucine Savi de Tové addre is among the African leaders that attended the ground breaking ceremony for construction of the East African Dangote Refinery at Lamu Port, Kenya.
“No interpreter. Not even the national TV stations beaming it live had translation ready. Kenyans watching were left guessing,” a commentator wondered.
“A summit that hosts a foreign Head of State should be able to speak to its own citizens. Most unfortunate,” Steven Mutooro said later on Wednesday.
The U$16 billion mega project is set to transform the energy and industrial landscape of Kenya and the region.
Togo an oil producing country is expected to invest in the Lamu Refinery.
Since Uganda has refused to invest in the Dangote refinery, it gives chance to Ethiopia, Benin and Togo to acquire more shares of the remaining 20%.
Meanwhile, Kenya has a chance to also increase shares from her previous 10%.
Abiy Ahmed Ali the Prime Minister of Ethiopia noted that the Lamu Refinery is a step towards enhancing Africa’s industrial capacity, creating opportunities, and establishing the foundations for greater economic and industrial sovereignty throughout East Africa.
“You, the industrial captains, investors, and entrepreneurs throughout the continent, must invest in Africa, have faith in our potential, and construct the transformative projects which will determine our common continental future,” Prime Minister Abiy said.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals picked Honeywell International for a U$300 million contract to provide engineering services and technology at its planned Kenya refinery.
