Five employees of the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) have travelled to Russia to pursue Master’s studies at Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University, as part of efforts to strengthen professional expertise in Rwanda’s mining, petroleum and gas sectors.
The five officials are among Rwandan beneficiaries of 60 scholarships offered by the Russian government this year to support Rwandans seeking to advance their education in different fields.
Their opportunity comes at a time when Rwanda is placing greater emphasis on developing specialised skills capable of supporting the sustainable management and development of the country’s mineral and energy resources.
Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University is a leading institution specialising in engineering and the mineral resources sector.
The university trains professionals in areas covering mining, petroleum, gas, energy, environmental management and other disciplines linked to the natural resources industry.
The university also hosts the International Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO, which promotes international academic mobility and the development of highly skilled professionals in mining and related technical fields.
For the RMB employees, the studies are expected to provide an opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and international exposure that can later be applied to Rwanda’s extractive industries.
The scholarship programme also highlights growing educational cooperation between Rwanda and Russia, particularly in technical and specialised fields.
Russia has increasingly promoted academic partnerships with African countries, including programmes focused on mineral-resource management and the training of professionals working in the extractive sector.
A 2026 programme hosted by Saint Petersburg Mining University, for example, is designed to equip African professionals with advanced knowledge and practical skills for managing mineral resources across the value chain, from exploration and resource assessment to extraction, processing and sustainable resource management.
The five RMB staff members are therefore expected to return with enhanced technical and managerial capabilities that could contribute to the country’s ambitions to make better use of its mineral, petroleum and gas resources.
The initiative also reflects the importance of investing in human capital as Rwanda seeks to build a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting economic transformation and ensuring that the country’s natural resources generate greater value for its economy.
Beyond individual academic advancement, the scholarships are expected to strengthen institutional capacity by equipping professionals with specialised knowledge that can be transferred to colleagues and applied in Rwanda’s mining and energy sectors.
As the beneficiaries begin their studies in Saint Petersburg, the programme marks another step in Rwanda’s efforts to expand international academic partnerships while developing the expertise needed to manage its natural resources more efficiently and sustainably.
