An investigation has exposed a massive embezzlement of South Africa’s state-owned electricity public utility that could have swindled over 39million Litres of Diesel worth 39litres.

The invention conducted by AmaBhungane reveals that Eskom paid hundreds of millions of rands for massive amounts of diesel that were logged as “received” in its books but never actually delivered to the Ankerlig power plant, leaving 39 million litres still missing over a year later.

It was determined that Eskom officials made at least 15 prepayments totaling R2.97 billion during emergency load-shedding periods.

Fuel was marked as delivered in Eskom’s SAP system, but physical checks and commodity traders confirmed the tanks were empty.

Eskom received a forensic report into tender MWP2197GX and initiated disciplinary actions against internal employees, while whistleblowers and groups like AfriForum pushed for criminal prosecutions.
