DOHA, Qatar – Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar who transformed the Gulf nation into one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential states, has died at the age of 74, Qatari authorities announced on Sunday. No immediate cause of death was disclosed.
Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad led the country from 1995 to 2013, overseeing an era of unprecedented economic growth, ambitious infrastructure development, and expanding international influence.
During his 18-year reign, Qatar emerged from a relatively small Gulf state into a global powerhouse driven by its vast natural gas wealth.
Under his leadership, Qatar invested heavily in education, healthcare, transportation, and global business, while building one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds.
His government also established the internationally renowned Al Jazeera Media Network, expanded Qatar Airways into a leading global airline, and successfully secured the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a milestone that elevated Qatar’s global profile.

Sheikh Hamad was equally known for reshaping Qatar’s foreign policy, positioning the country as a key diplomatic mediator in regional and international conflicts.
His administration pursued an independent foreign policy that gave Qatar influence far beyond its geographical size, although some of its regional relationships also drew criticism and occasionally strained ties with neighboring Gulf states.
In 2013, Sheikh Hamad made the rare decision among Gulf monarchs to voluntarily abdicate the throne, handing power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a move widely viewed as ensuring a smooth generational transition.
Following the announcement of his death, Qatar declared four days of national mourning, with public sector work suspended during the mourning period as the nation paid tribute to the leader many credit with laying the foundations of modern Qatar.
Tributes have begun pouring in from leaders around the world, praising Sheikh Hamad’s vision and his role in transforming Qatar into a major player in global diplomacy, investment, energy, and international affairs.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani leaves behind a legacy that reshaped Qatar’s history, turning the small Gulf nation into a country with global economic, political, and cultural influence.
His leadership will be remembered as a defining chapter in Qatar’s modern development and its rise on the world stage.
