98 Years Of History Burnt Down At Uganda’s Oldest University

Makerere University which is older than the republic of Uganda itself will take long to heal from the devastating loss caused by an ugly midnight fire that incinerated the oldest university in the country.

It is not yet known of the value of burnt material, records and information but insiders say it has been a huge loss. This building held student records and the archives of the Makerere University.

“Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable. But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible,” Vice-Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe tweeted.

Uganda Police has already launched investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak that incinerated the main building of the university.

According to the University authorities, the Main Building was completed in 1941 under the leadership of Mr. George C. Turner, Principal, Makerere College (1939-46). Earlier in 1938, the Duke of Gloucester, representing His Majesty King George VI had cut the first sod for the construction of the building on 3rd November.

Makerere University was first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970.
