Inmates at the DRC’s Bukavu Central Prison are living between life and death because of very deplorable conditions, Taarifa reports.
Information released by the Prison medical staff indicates that they have recorded 45 cases of inmate deaths in the 9-month interval, from January to September 2019.
Bukavu Prison management says this situation is a result of several factors including: the lack of food and the consumption of expired products damaged.
The medical center of Bukavu Central Prison announced in its letter of resentment to the provincial governor.
It is alleged that detainees often lack food, and today most prisoners suffer from acute malnutrition. They consume dairy products whose expiry date is June 2019.
“These products have aggravated the health of several prisoners,” say the 12 signatories of this letter.
The medical staff of Bukavu Central Prison also denounces the mismanagement and misappropriation of medical and non-medical inputs made available to them.
