Reports yet to be confirmed indicate that the AFC/M23 rebels and Kinshasa authorities are scheduled for roundtable Negotiations from far away Switzerland later today.

It has also emerged that the international community, including MONUSCO, the United States, Qatar, the African Union, and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, will take part in negotiating room.

The rebels said last week on Thursday that a “new round of dialogue” with the Kinshasa government would soon take place in Switzerland.

Lawrence Kanyuka the spokesperson for the rebels said that a delegation of the rebels was already enroute to Switzerland.

Top on the list of expectations is the re-opening of Goma International Airport  which the French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly requested for arguing it would facilitate humanitarian flights.

However, the AFC/M23 rejected those demands arguing there was no humanitarian crisis in the area.

The M23 labeled the initiative “inopportune” and argued that such decisions should not be made by France.

However, the new round of negotiations in Switzerland come at a time when the Kinshasa government troops continue bombarding civilian population in Minembwe and Highlands inhabited by Banyamulenge the ethnic Tutsi Congolese.

“Kinshasa regime chose the moment of the resumption of political negotiations to bombard, with the aid of Sukhoi aircraft, several villages in Minembwe, causing death and devastation among civilians as well as the destruction of numerous civilian homes, churches, schools, hospitals,” complained Bertrand Bisimwa the president of the rebels.

Clashes have persisted across parts of North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, with both sides accusing each other of violating ceasefire commitments.
