Shocking video circulating from Newlands West in Durban shows a bold cash-in-transit robbery that unfolded outside Midway Mall, with additional details pointing to a highly coordinated and heavily armed operation.
The footage depicts a group of suspects ambushing an armored vehicle on or near the Newlands Expressway before opening fire and using explosives to force it open.
Private security firm KZN VIP Security confirmed that multiple attackers, traveling in at least two vehicles, carried out the assault in broad daylight.
Within seconds, the group is seen grabbing large amounts of cash and other contents from the truck before transferring them into nearby vehicles.
The suspects quickly escape the scene, speeding away before law enforcement could intervene.
Emergency responders, including KZN VIP Security’s medical teams and the South African Police Service, were dispatched to the scene, and nearby roads were temporarily closed to allow for investigations.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were injuries or arrests linked to the incident, and the amount of money stolen remains undisclosed.
The robbery comes amid mixed national trends. According to the Cash-In-Transit Association, incidents across South Africa dropped by 51% in the 2025/2026 period.
However, KwaZulu-Natal remains a major hotspot for such crimes, with officials warning that the province continues to experience some of the most brazen and violent attacks.
Local sources told Taarifa that the intensity of these heists is increasing, particularly along key routes such as the N2 and M4 corridors.
A growing concern is the heightened risk to civilians, as these operations often unfold in busy public areas, exposing bystanders to significant danger.
The latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by organized criminal groups, even as overall numbers decline nationally.
