Tanzania has been ranked the fourth most attractive country for mining investment in Africa, according to the Fraser Institute’s Annual Survey of Mining Companies 2025, highlighting growing global confidence in the country’s mining sector.

The report places Tanzania 34th out of 68 jurisdictions worldwide, behind Botswana, Morocco and Zambia on the African continent. Botswana ranked 7th globally, Morocco 15th, and Zambia 25th.

The Fraser Institute said Tanzania’s improved standing reflects increasing investor confidence in the country’s mineral potential and its overall investment environment.

Tanzania’s overall score on the Investment Attractiveness Index rose to 68.04 in 2025, continuing a steady improvement from 62.75 in 2024 and 46.38 in 2023.

The index combines two main factors: the Best Practices Mineral Potential Index, which measures the geological potential of a country’s minerals, and the Policy Perception Index, which captures investors’ views on government policies, regulations and the general business climate.

According to the report, Tanzania’s policy perception score also improved, rising to 57.61 in 2025 from 55.41 in 2024, suggesting growing investor confidence in the country’s regulatory environment and long-term investment prospects.

The survey was sent to 2,304 senior executives in mining and exploration companies around the world, with 256 responses used to evaluate 68 mining jurisdictions globally.

Companies that participated in the survey reported a combined $4.2 billion in exploration spending in 2025, making the report an important indicator of how global mining investors view different countries.

For Tanzania, the ranking supports the government’s efforts to position mining as a key driver of economic growth. Authorities have been working to expand mineral exploration, strengthen institutions that regulate the sector and increase participation by Tanzanians in mining activities and related businesses.

The improved ranking suggests Tanzania is gradually gaining recognition as a competitive destination for mining investment in Africa and beyond.
