President Paul Kagame on Friday hosts members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Rwanda during a meeting that combined appreciation for international partnerships with frank reflections on the long-standing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Speaking to heads of mission and representatives of international organizations, President Kagame thanked diplomatic partners for their continued cooperation with Rwanda across multiple sectors, describing the country’s development journey as a shared achievement.

“What we have built together over many years and across different sectors with countries, partners you represent and different organizations is remarkable,” Kagame said.
“Our collaboration and friendship have been vital to Rwanda’s revival and development. We do not take this lightly and I thank you for it.”

The gathering served as an opportunity for Rwanda’s leadership to reflect on the country’s progress and its relationships with international partners, many of whom have supported Rwanda’s reconstruction and economic growth over the past three decades.
However, Kagame also used the occasion to draw attention to persistent instability in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an issue that continues to affect the wider Great Lakes region.

“The conflict in Eastern DRC is not new, it’s neither new nor is too difficult to understand,” he said. “It has been prolonged for decades due to neglect and complacence, notably by those with the power to make the biggest difference in resolving it.”

Eastern DRC has experienced cycles of armed conflict involving multiple armed groups for more than two decades, creating a complex humanitarian and security challenge for the region. Rwanda has repeatedly called for durable solutions that address the root causes of instability and ensure lasting peace.

Kagame emphasized that regional and international actors must remain engaged and committed to resolving the crisis rather than allowing it to persist.

Despite the challenges in the region, the president reiterated Rwanda’s commitment to constructive partnerships and continued collaboration with the international community.

The meeting with heads of mission is part of Rwanda’s regular diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening dialogue with foreign partners while addressing regional and global issues affecting the country.
