Belgium on Wednesday officially opened in Beni city, North Kivu, it’s office for Enabel- the agency for international cooperation.

Roxane de Bilderling the Belgium Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo flew to Beni to open the office and held discussions with the military governor of the region.

“Arrived in Beni, Nord Kivu. With the Military Governor Somo, we discussed security and the infrastructure and development projects,” the Belgian envoy said shortly after the meeting with Governor Somo.

She added, “Belgium is committed in the province to support these projects, for the benefit of the population, with the opening of the Enabel office.”

North Kivu province is partly under the control of the AFC/M23 Rebels who administer Bunagana border city neighbouring Uganda.

The AFC/M23 rebels are expanding their influence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, threatening the Beni territory in North Kivu as of mid-2024 to 2025.

The region faces a dual threat from AFC/M23 to the north and the Ugandan terrorist ADF group to the south.

The area faces complex insecurity, with the M23 operating in regions also affected by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
