For over a year Virunga National Park Authorities had not been in control of the park due to heightened rebel activities within the park territory.

Park authorities said on Thursday that they have regained control of 65% of its territory after a year of security instability.

During a press briefing held on February 5 in Beni, Virunga National Park presented the security report for the year 2025, in which it said was marked by armed conflicts and the M23 war.

The park stated that it lost control of several areas in the South and Center sectors, leading to a strategic withdrawal to the north to protect its teams.

The Park Authorities said that ommunity rangers ensured the monitoring of gorillas, allowing conservation efforts to continue.

The park reported that it now controls approximately 65% of its area, even though some zones remain inaccessible.

On the biodiversity front, eight births of mountain gorillas were recorded in 2025, an encouraging sign of resilience.
