Malakal, South Sudan — In a powerful display of international solidarity and women’s empowerment, 30 women in Malakal, South Sudan, have taken their first steps toward new professional futures after participating in a targeted skills training program facilitated by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Female Engagement Team.

The training—featuring sessions in sewing, beading, and tailoring—aims at boosting economic independence and resilience among local women.

Each stitch sewn and bead threaded symbolized more than just a craft; it was a step toward long-term economic opportunity and personal confidence.

The initiative reflects broader efforts by UNMISS peacekeepers to support community development while advancing gender equality in conflict-affected regions.

“This handcrafted work will strengthen and transform local women to be confident and economically independent. Empowering women means building resilient communities,” said Marie Kantegwa, UNMISS team leader, highlighting the transformative potential of such programs.

Background: Rwanda is a notable contributor to UNMISS peacekeeping efforts, sending both military and police personnel, including significant numbers of female peacekeepers, to serve in South Sudan.

For example, earlier contingents of Rwandan police deployed to Malakal included notable female participation; one past contingent of 240 officers included at least 46 women, reflecting Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to female representation in peace operations.

Through community engagement like this economic empowerment training, Rwandan female peacekeepers and the UNMISS team are helping bridge gaps between peacekeeping duties and sustainable community development, fostering hope and opportunity in a region striving for lasting peace.
