Emerging reports from Uvira indicate that thousands of defeated Burundian soldiers have been granted a safe corridor to return to their country.
Taarifa has established that AFC-M23 rebels have opened a corridor at the Gatumba border post to repatriate Burundian soldiers to their country.
Sources contacted confirm having seen long queues of humiliated Burundian military personnel returning to their country with their equipment.
“They were coming from the front lines in the Ruzizi plain and the Middle Highlands, where they were fighting alongside the FARDC and the Wazalendo against the AFC-M23 rebels,” a source said.
The sources also revealed that thousands of civilians were seen crossing from Uvira towards Burundi fearing that fighting may breakout.

Local sources have told Taarifa that the fleeing DRC forces have been exchanging gunfire against the Wazalendo militia since Friday at Mongemonge, about 12Km from the city of Baraka.
Burundi fighter jets have been sighted bombing the highlands of Mwenga, specifically in the villages of Rusanguku and Bilalombili with the aim of clearing obstacles along the way to reach the city of Baraka, from where Burundi troops would take boats to return home.
