Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, has announced that the country has recorded more than Rwf 200.3 billion in digital transactions since the rollout of technology-enabled payment systems through banks, financial institutions, and telecom operators in 2022.

She made the remarks on Friday, December 5, 2025, during the official launch of eKash, a new interoperable digital payments platform developed by RSwitch, Rwanda’s national payment switch.

The platform is designed to seamlessly connect financial institutions and telecom networks, allowing users to transact across different channels with ease.

So far, 22 institutions have registered to participate in the system.

Rwanda has spent the last decade accelerating its transition to a cashless economy through national strategies promoting digital innovation, financial inclusion, and secure electronic payment infrastructure.

RSwitch, founded to provide interoperability across financial systems, has played a central role in enabling ATM, POS, and mobile payments nationwide.

The introduction of eKash marks another major milestone in Rwanda’s journey toward a fully integrated digital financial ecosystem, reducing transaction costs, expanding access, and strengthening the country’s digital economy.
