The world’s largest protected area has been officially launched code named “Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor.”
Spreading over 540,000 km² the “Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor,” is the world’s largest community-managed protected area.
This zone dedicated to conservation and sustainable development represents a groundbreaking initiative, personally championed by the Head of State.
The announcement took place on Friday, November 14 during the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) taking place in Brazil, (November 10-21).
The Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor project marks a new stage in the Congolese environmental strategy, already central to international climate negotiations due to the major role of the country’s forests and peatlands in regulating the global climate.
By creating this ecological and socio-economic corridor, the DRC government sait it aims to reconcile ecosystem protection, improved living conditions for local communities, and the revitalization of riparian economies.
COP30 is the second-largest COP in history with 56,118 delegates attending.
