New Airtel Rwanda Boss Pledges to Deepen Digital and Financial Inclusion

Airtel Rwanda’s newly appointed Managing Director, Mr. Sujay Chakrabarti, has vowed to drive growth, enhance customer experience, and expand digital and financial inclusion across the country as he assumes leadership of one of Rwanda’s largest telecom operators.

“I’m excited to join Airtel Rwanda at such a dynamic time,” Mr. Chakrabarti said. “I look forward to driving growth, enhancing customer experience, and expanding digital and financial inclusion across the country.”

His appointment, effective October 13, 2025, marks a new chapter for Airtel Rwanda as it continues to consolidate its market position and invest in innovative technologies. Mr. Chakrabarti brings a wealth of experience in business transformation, commercial excellence, and digital adoption, having served in several senior roles within Bharti Airtel India.

Before joining Airtel Rwanda, he was Circle CEO for the Bihar & Jharkhand region, and previously held similar leadership roles in Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh. He also served as National Operations Head for Airtel Digital TV. He holds an MBA from the University of Calcutta and an Executive Management Certification from the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley.

Mr. Chakrabarti succeeds Mr. Emmanuel Hamez, who is retiring after nearly a decade with Airtel Africa, including four years as Managing Director of Airtel Rwanda. Under his leadership, Airtel became the first mobile network operator in Rwanda to achieve 100% 4G coverage across all its sites.

Mr. Hamez also introduced Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and eSIM services—both firsts in Rwanda—and spearheaded the “Airtel Imagine” 4G smartphone program in partnership with the Ministry of ICT & Innovation, enabling over 1.2 million Rwandans to transition from feature phones to smartphones.

Airtel Rwanda has expressed its gratitude to Mr. Hamez for his remarkable leadership and welcomed Mr. Chakrabarti, whose focus on customer experience and digital transformation is expected to drive the company’s next phase of growth and innovation.
