President Paul Kagame on Monday met with senior African Union health officials to discuss the operationalisation of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) and broader efforts to strengthen health systems across the continent.
The meeting brought together Amb. Amma Twum-Amoah, the AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, and Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, the Director General of the African Medicines Agency.
President Kagame, who serves as the African Union Champion for Domestic Health Financing, reiterated Rwanda’s commitment to supporting the Agency’s effective establishment and its goal of enhancing access to safe, high-quality, and affordable medicines in Africa.
The discussions also focused on accelerating regulatory harmonisation among African states, promoting local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and building resilient public health systems capable of responding to future pandemics.
Headquartered in Kigali, the African Medicines Agency was created to improve the regulation of medical products across the continent and ensure stronger coordination among national health authorities.
