Rwanda has reaffirmed its firm commitment to peace, security, and the protection of civilians in the Great Lakes region, while rejecting what it described as unfounded accusations regarding its alleged involvement in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking during Rwanda’s intervention on the draft resolution A/HRC/60/L.32 concerning the human rights situation in eastern DRC, Ambassador Urujeni Feza Bakuramutsa, Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, said that repeating baseless narratives without addressing the underlying causes of the crisis would not advance regional peace.

“…doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result,” Ambassador Urujeni stated. “Continuing to repeat the same accusatory narratives while ignoring the deep-rooted causes of the conflict will not bring peace to the people of the DRC, nor to our region.”

Ambassador Urujeni emphasized that Rwanda will continue to engage constructively in efforts aimed at restoring stability and dignity to the populations affected by conflict in the Great Lakes region.

She insisted that security, accountability, and the protection of civilians must remain central pillars of any initiative seeking to build lasting peace.

Her remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa, with the DRC government repeatedly accusing Rwanda of supporting armed groups in its eastern provinces—claims Rwanda has consistently and categorically denied.

Rwanda, Ambassador Urujeni noted, remains committed to working with regional and international partners to ensure that solutions to the DRC crisis are grounded in facts, regional cooperation, and shared responsibility, rather than politicized blame.

“Rwanda rejects the unfounded accusations leveled against it,” she said, “but will nevertheless continue to engage constructively to ensure that security, accountability, and the protection of civilians remain at the heart of any initiative aimed at restoring peace and the dignity of the populations in the Great Lakes region.”
