Police in Musanze District have arrested a young man and his mother after they were found in possession of 2,520 rolls of cannabis, allegedly intended for distribution within the community.
The arrest took place on Monday night in Kiryi Village, Kigombe Cell, Muhoza Sector, Musanze District, after local residents tipped off authorities about the illegal activity.
According to the Northern Province Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) I Ngirabakunzi, it was community members who provided the crucial information that led to the arrest.
“Residents are our primary partners in ensuring public safety. The information they share helps us prevent and combat crime. That is how these suspects were apprehended,” IP Ngirabakunzi told Taarifa Rwanda.
He added that local residents are increasingly aware of the dangers posed by criminal activities, including drug trafficking, and are now more willing to cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace and security in their neighborhoods.
The police spokesperson warned individuals involved in any form of criminal activity—particularly the trafficking and use of narcotics—that they will be arrested and prosecuted without exception.
Cannabis is classified in Rwanda as a “highly prohibited narcotic drug,” and those convicted of trafficking or distributing it face severe penalties, including life imprisonment.
The suspects are currently detained at Muhoza Police Station pending further investigation and transfer to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
