Rwanda’s journey from devastation to development is a testament to discipline, unity, and visionary leadership, as highlighted by Lt Gen (Rtd) Charles Kayonga, Rwanda’s Ambassador to Turkey, during an X Space conversation themed “The Cost of Loving One’s Country.”
Speaking at an event hosted by Intango y’Umurage in collaboration with Hobe Australia, Ambassador Kayonga drew attention to the extraordinary progress Rwanda has achieved since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, citing rapid economic growth, strong international partnerships, and landmark achievements in tourism, including hosting Africa’s first world-class cycling event.
Reflecting on the country’s transformation, he credited the foundational principles that guided the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) during the liberation struggle—discipline, self-reliance, and unity—as key drivers of Rwanda’s success today.
Ambassador Kayonga also paid tribute to the sacrifices of the young men and women who risked their lives to end ethnic divisions and rebuild the nation, emphasizing the crucial role of visionary leadership under President Paul Kagame.
Drawing lessons for the younger generation, he encouraged Rwandans to uphold values of unity, integrity, courage, and active citizenship.
“The cost of loving one’s country is real, but the rewards—peace, unity, and progress—are priceless,” he said. The conversation underscored that Rwanda’s remarkable journey continues to inspire, proving that even the greatest challenges can be overcome with collective purpose and steadfast leadership.
