The Sixth Proximity Commanders’ Meeting between the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 5 Division and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Division has concluded after three days of discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation and security along the shared border.
The meeting, held in Kabale and Mbarara, brought together senior officers from both armies to review progress in joint operations and to outline strategies to combat cross-border crimes and enhance stability in border communities.
Closing the meeting, UPDF Deputy Land Forces Commander, Major General Francis Takirwa, thanked participants for their active involvement and said the discussions demonstrated the commitment of both sides to address common challenges.
He stressed the importance of continued collaboration, particularly in sharing information and coordinating operations to curb illegal activities across the border. “Enhanced security benefits both sides, as it allows citizens to confidently engage in business and other activities, knowing that their safety is assured,” Maj Gen Takirwa said.
He expressed appreciation to the Presidents of Rwanda and Uganda, Paul Kagame and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, whose leadership he said has enabled such joint initiatives. He also commended the Chiefs of Defence Staff of both countries for facilitating the meetings.
The proximity commanders’ meetings are held regularly to strengthen cooperation between the two forces and to promote peace, security, and economic activity along the Rwanda–Uganda border.
