Rayon Sports Women have written a new chapter in Rwandan football by reaching the final of the CECAFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers for the first time in history.
The Kigali side stunned the region with a remarkable campaign that began in the group stage, where they defeated defending champions CBE of Ethiopia and held Burundi’s Top Girls Academy to a draw.
The performances secured their place in the semifinals, a stage they had never reached before.
In the semifinal clash against Uganda’s Kampala Queens, Rayon displayed resilience, holding their opponents to a draw before triumphing in a dramatic penalty shootout to book their ticket to the final.
The milestone carries even greater weight: the winner of the CECAFA qualifiers earns a coveted slot at the CAF Women’s Champions League (where all participating teams receive US$150,000).
Following today’s historic win, FERWAFA’ executive committee announced a bonus of Rwf 150,000 per player, in recognition of their achievement and for making Rwanda proud.
Speaking after the match, Nikita Gicanda, Commissioner of Women’s Football, said:
“This is a dream come true for all of us.
“The team has worked so hard, and to see Rwanda exceeding expectations is an incredible feeling. This victory is not just for the team, but for every Rwandan girl who has dreams of more through sport.”
The final now awaits, with the Rwandan side carrying the hopes of a nation and the chance to make their mark in Africa’s premier women’s club competition.
