Birth and death registration rates in Rwanda have improved over the past year, according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR).
Birth registration completeness rose slightly from 90.0% in 2023 to 90.3% in 2024, while death registration saw a sharper increase from 41.8% in 2023 to 46.1% in 2024.
These gains were highlighted as Rwanda joined other African nations in celebrating Africa Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Day.
This year’s theme — “Leveraging Digital Civil Registration Systems to Build Inclusive and Accessible Services” — underscores the importance of using technology to ensure no one is left behind.
NISR, working with its partners, continues to strengthen digital systems to record every life event, from birth to death.
Officials say these records are vital for planning public services, allocating resources, and safeguarding individuals’ rights.
The institute noted that the improvements reflect sustained efforts to modernize registration systems, raise public awareness, and close remaining gaps in coverage, particularly in death registration.
NISR pledged to continue investing in inclusive, technology-driven solutions that make vital records accessible to all Rwandans.
