Finance Minister, Yusuf Murangwa, on Tuesday met with a Chinese delegation led by Shanghai Construction Group CEO Ye Weidong to assess the progress of the Masaka Hospital expansion and explore fresh avenues for cooperation in infrastructure, housing, and technology.
Masaka Hospital, located in Kicukiro District, is an urban general hospital built between 2008 and 2011 with a $42 million grant from the Government of China, offered as a gift to Rwanda.
Designed and constructed by China, the hospital officially opened in 2011 and has since provided a wide range of services, including general and emergency medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, dentistry, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, maternity care, pediatrics, imaging, surgery, tuberculosis treatment, HIV/AIDS care, and outpatient services.
Primarily serving residents of Kicukiro, Gasabo, and Rwamagana districts—an estimated 380,000 to 400,000 people—Masaka Hospital is directly administered by the Ministry of Health.
Since 2018, it has been staffed by a team of Chinese doctors working alongside Rwandan medical professionals, with some Rwandan doctors having pursued advanced degrees in China before returning to serve the community.
The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between Rwanda and China, with both sides expressing commitment to completing the hospital expansion and building on decades of cooperation to advance future development projects across key sectors.
