Former Kigali Mayor and UN Diplomat Dr Aisa Kirabo Kacyira Dies After Long Illness

Dr Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, a distinguished Rwandan seasoned diplomat who served in senior roles at the United Nations, has died after a long illness.

At the time of her passing, Dr Kirabo was Head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), where she oversaw logistical and operational support for African Union peacekeeping efforts.

Her career spanned high-profile positions in both national and international service.

She was Mayor of Kigali from 2006 to 2011, Rwanda’s Ambassador to Ghana, and later Deputy Executive Director and Assistant Secretary-General at UN-Habitat, where she championed sustainable urban development.

Dr Kirabo was widely respected for her leadership, diplomatic skill, and commitment to advancing urban resilience and inclusive governance.

Tributes from colleagues and leaders across the globe hailed her as a trailblazer who inspired women in leadership and dedicated her life to public service.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
