Doctors Without Borders organisation popularily known by its French acronym “Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) announced on Thursday it will end its operations in Uvira at the end of July 2025.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) announces the end of its intervention in Uvira, South Kivu province, by the end of July 2025. This decision follows the achievement of the medical objectives set by the organization at the beginning of its intervention in November 2024,” says the MSF note.

A large part of South Kivu province is currently under control by the AFC/M23 rebel movement which also maintains a grip on North Kivu province of DRC.

MSF said it will no longer take on new cases of wounded and cholera at the Uvira General Reference Hospital.

The organisation added that the congolese teams on site are now fully equipped and trained to provide independent care.

“We will, however, maintain epidemiological surveillance and remain ready to respond to any new emergency,” MSF said in a statement.

MSF gave an overview of its achievements in Uvira, including providing essential care to 203 patients with gunshot wounds and other emergency trauma, treating 1,626 cases of cholera in Ruzizi, Uvira and Kiliba, and caring for 604 survivors of sexual violence in Uvira.

Uvira city and the entire South Kivu territory are facing several challenges, including nearly 250,000 displaced people and floods since May in the Nundu health zone, which have led to the destruction of health infrastructure and left many people homeless.
