Police Breaks Drug Trafficking Ring In Rubavu

Seven people said to be members of the same ring that traffics narcotics into the country were arrested separately in Rubavu District.

The “targeted operations” were conducted between September 25th and 28th. They were arrested in possessions of combined 4400 pellets of cannabis.

Police identified the suspects as Sarah Iyakaremye, Sébastien Rurangirwa, Placide Ngendahimana, Jean Claude Siboyintore, Daniel Tuyiyegurire, Ezechiel Hategekimana and Abdul Niyibizi.

The suspects said they were trafficking the narcotics from DR Congo and distributing mainly to dealers in City of Kigali.

Iyakaremye was arrested red-handed as he crossed into Rwanda with the narcotics, through an illegal border.

The Police spokesperson for the Western region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi said that the continuous operations are facilitated by information from the people.

“Each of the operations in which these seven suspects and similar previous successful operations, were based on credible information provided by residents, and we commend this strengthed partnership which is yielding results,” CIP Kayigi said.

He added that the operations coupled with awareness campaigns are meant to break chains of suppliers, and called for continued information sharing on anyone dealing in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances to face justice and to save especially the young people, who are the majority victims.

According to article 263 of the penal code, any person convicted as a “major drug dealer” faces between 20 years and life in prison.
