Police in Kinazi Sector, Ruhango District have arrested a 44-year-old man for fraud. The man called Innocent Karake, is accused of posing as a Compassion International staff member, a non-governmental organization that sponsors children, and soliciting money from locals supposedly to register their children.
Police Spokesperson in the Southern Province, CIP Bonaventure Karekezi announced that Karake was arrested after residents informed the Police.
“He came and told the residents that he works for a project that wishes to register children between 7 and 23 years old. He said the project would pay for their primary, secondary and university education for free, on the condition of a prerequisite payment of Rwf300.000 for every household whose child will be sponsored. That’s when the residents reported him to Police, and he was arrested,” he said.
CIP Karekezi further said that when Karake was arrested, he was found with three fake ID cards with his image but with different names as well as forged documents that he gave to the residents as a proof that that their children had been successfully registered.
The Police Spokesperson urged the residents to be alert because there are many crooks today and they do it in such a sophisticated way that it is difficult to recognize for what it is.
“Nowadays, crookery is on the rise, so citizens should be alert for people who promise to offer them services or any other kind of support without the awareness of local authorities, since any development project is known by government institution. Therefore, those who work for the project shouldn’t solicit money from people,” he said.
CIP Karekezi lauded the collaboration between Police and the public and said that they now understand the importance of community policing by providing information about security threats on time.
He urged the public to continue providing information on time about anything that may threaten their security.
Meanwhile, Karake was handed to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at Kinazi Police Station to be prosecuted for the charges against him.
