Two people, a truck mechanic and and the driver have died when the tank they were trying to repair cought fire and exploded injuring one person.
Eyewitnesses from the Gikondo where the incident occurred said that it happened around 2pm on Thursday at Magambo garage located in Kigugu Village I, Kinunga Cell, Kicukiro District.
Ambulances intervened and took the injured to the Kigali University Hospital (CHUK) for treatment.
The victims include one from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one Rwandan, and two more people who were injured.
They were repairing the truck with licence plate RAD413A.
Reports say that the mechanic identified as Kamudra Mitanyurwa, 59 lost his life while the driver Jean Claude Gakwandi, 47 who had been badly injured died later on at the hospital.
Police Spokesperson in the City of Kigali, CIP Goretti Umutesi confirmed that the vehicle caught fire.
She said that the driver of the vehicle Jean Claude Gakwandi and Emmanuel Nahayo, were seriously injured and taken to CHUK where the first died on arrival.
She also said that Kamudra Mitanyurwa, a 59-year-old citizen of Rwanda and DR Congo died and his body was taken to Kacyiru Hospital.
Kamudra was repairing the tank, while the driver was on top of it showing him the damaged area.
The third victim, Nahayo, who was injured is a mechanic who was helping.
Eyewitnesses blamed the accident on malpractice because the vehicle going to be repaired should first be washed using water.
“The explosion was due to malpractice, a truck carrying petrol is hostile towards electric current. What happened was because they might have overlooked it,” one witness said.
