A night security guard at Hyton Motel located in Gatsibo District was arrested for allegedly stealing cash from a bag of a Tanzanian traveler.
The 35-year-old guard employed by the motel and tasked to handle security at the accommodation facility was identified as Boise Nyanjobe.
The guard was caught by the lodge managers located in Kabarore sector, Karenge cell, Kabingo village after they searched him and found the money.
It was alleged he stole Rwf 250.000 and $ 300 while the victim was sleeping according to police.
Eastern Region Police Spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Hamdun Twizeyimana confirmed the developments and said the suspect has since been handed over to RIB for further investigations.
“He admitted to stealing the money but said it was his first time and did it with temptation” said CIP Twizeyimana.
The suspect used a spare key to gain access to the room, according to police.
He asked the lodge management to look into recent records to see whether he had not stolen passengers’ valuables during the security checks in the past.
Moreover, the authorities asked the motel to improve screening of security guards with a warning that repeated thefts by its guards could result in losing its clients.
“Management of the firm that hired the man had been notified and had been called to a meeting. They would be told to be more careful when screening people for the job” said CIP Twizeyimana.
Meanwhile, the motel management has distanced themselves from the conduct of the guard and assured their clients of more vigilance.
“This offense was committed by an individual, he said. The lodge’s security remained up to standard” said the lodge manager Rodriguez Ruzibiza.
