HIV Among Female Sex Workers Reaches 45.8%

Prevalence of HIV/Aids is at alarming levels among Rwanda’s female sex workers, the Parliamentary Network on Population and Development (RPRPD) has warned.

In every 100 female sex workers, the RPRPD found that almost half were infected with the virus that causes AIDS.

According to RPRPD the prevalence of HIV infections among female sex workers in Rwanda was at level of 45.8%.

Hon. Dr DrGamariel the chairperson of RPRPD called upon members of the faith based organisations to mobilise their congregations against the scourge of HIV/Aids.

He said faith based organisations should join the government in mobilizing citizens against sexual abuse which mostly results in HIV infections.

However, Mukabalisa Donatille, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Rwanda Parliament said abstenence was the only sure way to avoid contracting HIV/Aids

Meanwhile, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana a director at Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) also presented on the status of government efforts in the fight against HIV/Aids.

This high level workshop has attracted about 300 high profile delegates from the Government, Private Sector, Development Partners, Civil Society, Faith Based Organization.

RPRPD has 75 members from Senators and Deputies and its daily activities involve family planning, youth reproductive health, fight against HIV/AIDS and maternity and childcare, all of which aim at promoting social welfare as a milestone for a sustainable economic development.
