RPolice in Rusizi District have appealed to students there to desist from drug abuse and other conducts that may lead them to conflicts with the law.
They were instead told to share information with law enforcers on whoever is involved in any unlawful conduct for correction.
The call was made recently by Inspector of Police (IP) Ange Irakarama the district community liaisons officer while speaking to over 300 students from Nkanka secondary school located in Nkaka sector.
He added that teachers and parents must have the ability to notice students who have been recruited in drug substance abuse, saying the victims usually have weird characteristics like having withdrawn tendencies and exhibit violence related characteristics.
He told the gathering which included teachers and administrators that the fight against drugs especially Cannabis smoking among the youth was a shared responsibility and implored all and sundry to participate and bring the situation to an end.
“Schools’ management should work hand in hand with law enforcement officials to ensure we tame drug consumption and recruitment of students into abuse,” added IP Irakarama
She noted that in recent times drugs such as Cannabis have been abused by the youth, especially students, before adding that drug effects on society were worrying.
The DCLO explained that when one reaches the stage of addiction, the drug controls the nervous systems and destabilizes it and at this stage, the user becomes distressed which leads to various health and social hazards.
