Two Arrested With Forged Money

Two people were arrested separately in Bugesera and Gasabo districts on suspicion of counterfeiting and circulating money.

Hadja Mukeshimana, 30, was arrested in Rilima Sector in Bugesera with Rwf138, 000, all forged while Fabrice Habimana was apprehended in Rusororo Sector in Gasabo with forged bills amounting to Rwf60, 000.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern region Police spokesperson said Mukeshimana was caught red-handed after defrauding a telecom banking agent.

“She first wired Rwf50, 000 on her telecom account, fortunate enough the agent noticed that the currency notes were fake. She was caught by residents before fleeing the scene, when they searched her they found other forged bills. She was then handed over to Police with the exhibits,” CIP Kanamugire said.

In Kigali, CIP Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the central region, said that Habimana was arrested at an Equity Bank agent as he tried to deposit fake bills amounting to Rwf60, 000.

The forged bills were in the denominations of Rwf2, 000.

Police called for vigilance against such criminals and to thoroughly check the bills before making any business transactions.

According to article 269 of the new penal code, anyone convicted of counterfeit, falsification or alteration of currency or monetary signs or their distribution faces an imprisonment term of not less than five years and not more than seven years.
