Green Hills Academy Students Raise Funds For Health Insurance For 150 Vulnerable Residents

Green Hills Academy students (S5&S6) have joined residents in Umuganda, a monthly community exercise, and paid for health insurance for vulnerable people living with disabilities in Rutunga Sector, Gasabo District, city of Kigali.

Green Hills Academy alumni have been going to Rutunga Sector over the last 5 years to visit historical artifacts which highlight the royal life and Rwanda’s history.

This year is unique because the students, accompanied by some of their teachers, participated in Umuganda with other residents and paid for health insurance for 150 residents living with disabilities from 25 vulnerable families.

One of the students, Louis Ganza, said that they will continue helping the poor.

“Usually, we collect money for some of our activities as students, but it is for the first time that we have paid for health insurance for vulnerable people. We intend to continue doing it,” he said.

Green Hills Academy secondary school’s head teacher, Anna Bagabe says this charitable work was an idea from the students.

“They agreed that it not good to visit and just learn history, and hence the idea of helping the needy in this area. One of the uniqueness of this year is that it is for the first time that they have joined residents in the community exercise far away from our school and that’s something they were very happy about,” she said.

During the community exercise, the students, together with residents cleared the bushes along the road to Rutunga Stadium, and constructed kitchen gardens for two people with disabilities.
