District Authorities In Nothern Rwanda Ban Food At Office

Rulindo District administration has banned carrying food to offices saying the practice is unhygienic and affects productivity.

Effective from November 13, the district administration said, no employee is allowed to bring food at office.

“I write this letter to let you know that bringing food stuff in offices is prohibited. Failure to respect this directive will be considered as indiscipline,” reads part of a translated statement signed by Rulindo District Executive Secretary, Godfrey Muhanguzi.

Failure to respect the directive will attract punishment in accordance with Presidential Order No65/01 of 04/03/2014 determining modalities of imposing disciplinary sanctions for public servants.

The circular says an inspection carried out on public servants management revealed that some staff bring bread, chapatti, and doughnuts among other food stuffs and eat from inside their offices causing untidy environments and spoil official documents.

“Heads of departments at the district and executive secretaries of sectors are requested to ensure that no staff under their supervision brings and eats food in office,” reads the anti-meals statement.

The development has attracted harsh criticism from employees.

Staff claim that they live very far and thus have to prepare and carry food for breakfast and lunch because they can’t find time to leave office and go home to eat and return to office on time.

Regarding the safety of documents,  staff say they have designated places to eat from and that the directive is unfair and unfounded.

Regardless, the directive is already in effect.
