About 55 years ago, the first University opened in Rwanda under its French naming Université Nationale du Rwanda (UNR).
This was the country’s largest institution of higher learning and has remained so until today since it opened its gates in 1963.
However, there is something very interesting about this academic facility – the first student to enroll at this university is still alive and strong and has vivid memories of this institution.
Dr. Venant Ntabomvura was the first student to register at the former National University of Rwanda. His registration number – 001 as student number says it all
Later Dr. Ntabomvura became the third Rector of UNR and was during his career appointed Minister of social affairs and Director General of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire De Butare (CHUB).
He now lives a humbly in remote Kibirizi Sector in Gisagara district.
