Police in Rwamagana District has arrested a man identified as Francois Tuyambaze 56, for allegedly distilling potent gin commonly known as Kanyanga.
Tuyambaze was arrested on August 26 in Bicaca Cell of Karenge Sector during a Police crackdown on drug dealers, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, said.
At the time of his arrest, Tuyambaze was found in possession of 35 liters of the gin which he had already distilled.
“He was arrested distilling the gin,” CIP Kanamugire said adding that his tools including; drums, pipes and raw materials he was using to distill the psychotropic substances were confiscated.
He attributed the arrest to residents that alerted Police about Tuyambaze’s “criminal business.”
According to CIP Kanamugire, similar operation was on the same day conducted at Mahama Sector in Kirehe District where Police seized 200 liters of illicit brew.
“Police will not relent in cracking down on wrongdoers and drug dealers in particular to keep communities safer and free from anything that may affect their wellbeing,” CIP Kanamugire warned.
Article 594, paragraph 2, of the Penal Code, stipulates that ‘any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine between Frw 500,000 and Frw 5 million.
